How to care for your flowers

How to care for your flowers

There’s nothing quite like receiving a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers.

Whether they’re a gift from someone special or a treat for yourself, fresh blooms instantly brighten a room and lift the mood. But without the right care, flowers can fade far too quickly.

The good news? With just a little attention, you can keep your flowers looking fresh and vibrant for much longer.

Here’s our simple guide to caring for your blooms at home.

Start With a Clean Vase

Before arranging your flowers, always make sure your vase is clean.

Bacteria is one of the biggest causes of early wilting, and even a slightly dirty vase can shorten the life of your flowers.

Wash your vase with warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly before use.

Trim the Stems

When your flowers arrive, trim the stems before placing them in water.

Cut about 1–2cm from the bottom of each stem at a slight angle.

This helps the flowers absorb water more easily and prevents the stems from sitting flat at the bottom of the vase.

For best results, trim the stems every few days.

Remove Leaves Below the Waterline

Any leaves sitting in the water will quickly rot and create bacteria.

Remove any foliage that falls below the water level to keep your arrangement fresher for longer.

Use Fresh Water (and change it often)

Fill your vase with fresh, room-temperature water and add any flower food provided.

To keep your flowers healthy:

Change the water every 2–3 days

Rinse the vase between refills

Re-trim the stems when you change the water

This small step makes a big difference.

Keep Flowers Cool

Flowers last longer in a cool environment.

Avoid placing them:

In direct sunlight

Near radiators or heaters

Close to appliances that give off heat

In draughty areas

A cool room will help your flowers stay vibrant.

Keep Them Away From Fruit

It may sound surprising, but fresh fruit releases a natural gas called ethylene that causes flowers to age faster.

Keep your bouquet away from fruit bowls to extend its lifespan.

Remove Wilting Blooms

As individual flowers begin to fade, gently remove them from the arrangement.

This helps the remaining flowers last longer and keeps the display looking fresh.

Enjoy Them for Longer

With the right care, many fresh bouquets can last well over a week — sometimes even longer.

A little attention goes a long way in keeping your flowers beautiful.
